A Request to Non-Multiple Soulbonders

by Azusa

Speaking as someone who soulbonds, can I just request that if you're going to talk about SBing insofar as explaining that it's not a mental disorder, please do the following things?

1. Know the clinical names of the diagnoses you're talking about and spell them correctly. Know what they mean and what the diagnostic criteria are. Don't just go by what you've heard; this is not difficult to look up on your own.

2. If you're going through the obligatory "SBing is not multiple personality" spiel, please don't tag all multiplicity as a disorder off the bat. Don't say "SBing is not MPD because soulbonds are aware of each other and share memories." Plenty of multiples have that too, and they shouldn't all be automatically tagged as having a mental illness if it isn't detrimental to them.

3. Also, schizophrenia (note spelling) is not multiplicity, but if you followed Step 1, you should already be aware of that.

Otherwise, you're really not helping anybody. You don't put forth a very good case for yourselves if you don't even know the correct names and symptoms of the diagnoses you're telling people you don't have, and even if it seems like you're just making a case for your own sanity, you aren't really helping the cause of public acceptance of ANY kind of more-than-one identity if you take the rigid standpoint of "if you do this it's a disorder and if you do this it isn't." Depending on how your own SBing changes and evolves over time, the divisions you've laid down may come back someday to bite you in the ass.

This rant is brought to you by reading too many screeds by people who didn't bother to look around the web a bit, the letter X, and fhqwhgads.
